Welcome to this week's edition of SeeDarkly Sunday DisCOVERies, a weekly look at goth/industrial cover songs! First time visitor? Click here for details. :)

Third Sunday of the month means it's time for a Throwback to something before the 21st Century:

The Cramps - Fever
Fever, originally recorded by Little Willie John and written by Eddie Cooley and Otis Blackwell, has been covered by a nigh-countless variety of artists since 1956: pop, rock, country, dance, etc... Covers of the song have been featured on as many different genres of television and film as well: romance, comedy, science fiction, etc...
The most well known version might be the one Peggy Lee recorded in 1958, only 3 years after the original. Not only did her version change the tone of the song from "jazzy up-beat swing" to "sultry and seductive," but Lee also wrote additional lyrics that have been included in most covers since, including one by a little gothabilly punk band out of New York City.

In 1980, The Cramps recorded the song and placed it as the last track on their first full length album, Songs the Lord Taught Us. The track was released as a single in the UK that year. It took the song another step down in tempo, with an elemental minimalism and a creative use of surf guitar techniques that set a far more sinister mood. Recently included on the soundtrack for the movie, The Hangover Part III, it may not have been among their most "successful" recordings by popular standards at the time it was released, it is certainly among their most memorable today.
(Editorial note 4/17/17: Youtube has since removed the track from the band's playable catalog and Soundcloud only offers a brief preview without a "Go+" account. This is all I could find to replace the dead link for now:)

Next week:
We'll pick up the pace and have something more stomp than swirl.
And then, since we have 5 Sundays this month, we'll do Fifth Sunday A La Mode!

Comments, suggestions, discussions, etc... welcome!

I'll be spinning when/where! Check my schedule for details on that event and several other upcoming events as well. If you like anything featured here, be sure to request it when you come to dance! ^_^
