Welcome to SeeDarkly Sunday DisCOVERies:
a weekly exploration of goth, industrial, & dark alternative cover songs!
First time here? Click here for details from first entry.

Last week's entry was not about the moon the same way this week's entry is not about masturbation... er... I mean the Sun, The Sun! ಠ‿↼
Here's a bouncey synthpop/industrial revision of a punk alternative anthem:

Reizstrom - Blister In The Sun (Violent Femmes)
Blister in the Sun is the first song found on Violent Femmes' seminal self-titled album released in 1983. The song itself was not released as a single until 1997 when they rerecorded it and did a jazzy low tempo remake of it at the request of John Cusack for his film, Gross Point Blank.
While it seems many presume the lyrics infer that it's about teenage masturbation, singer/songwriter Gordon Gano emphatically dismisses that contention while for years being more than a little vague on its actual meaning.
In 2007, Gano granted rights for the Wendy's hamburger franchise to use the song in a TV ad, which led to bass player Brian Ritchie suing him for the wrongful authorization of dual-owned IP rights. Ritchie stated, "I don't like having my sound misappropriated to sell harmful products, such as fast food… that's not why we made the music." It was baffling to him on another level as well: Gano is a vegetarian and neither of them consume fast-food.
Despite its lack of traditional release, the track is one of their most recognizable. It's fair to say the song's long term college and alternative radio play and cult status eventually led to the album's multi-platinum sales record, though it took many years longer than most that achieve similar success.

There are a little over a dozen covers of the song, most done in this century but hardly worth mention beyond their mere existence.

Excepting, of course, this charming and poppy cover done by a two-man German EBM project made up of Me Cha from Menschliche Energie & Skip Intro of Cold Bit.
Reizstrom, after the release of two albums in 2009 & 2010, decided to have a bit of fun and do a covers E.P. where they would deconstruct guitar-based songs into dark electronic renditions. The E.P., titled Gitarre Kaput, was released in June of 2011 and also features covers of songs by New Model Army, The Cramps, Iggy Pop, Elvis Presley, Pink Turns Blue, and a cover of the TV theme for Rawhide. Their take on Blister seems rooted in synthpop influence from early Depeche Mode, blended with more industrial elements and a slightly deeper vocal range.
Two years later they did a followup covers album, Gitarre Total Kaputt, from which I could easily have chosen one of two other tracks to feature in this entry if not for planning to highlight other artists doing those same songs in the near future.(Would it be a spoiler if I told you something's going on in a temple?)
If you click through to their Bandcamp, you might find you like one of their other covers better, but for my PWYW money, this is one of their most entertaining and fun!:

Next week:
February is the month I devote to those dark/goth/industrial covers that appeal to a Dark Valentinian motif... and for 2018 it focuses on 3 Loves & A Crush! The first of the month's features is an EBM cover to teach Murphy's other law: some kinds of love are strange!

Feel free to tell me what you think about today's cover! Comments, suggestions, discussions, etc... welcome!
(You do NOT need a Dreamwidth account to comment, but all comments are screened for spam prevention.)

In February I'll spin twice unless something new comes up. As always you can check my schedule if you've any interest to join and want the details! ಠ‿↼

Explore the darkness,
