Welcome to the 50th entry of SeeDarkly Sunday DisCOVERies:
a weekly exploration of goth, industrial, & dark alternative cover songs!
First time here? Click here for details from first entry.
I don't really have any feeling toward pop-artist Kesha generally other than I don't enjoy her music. But she's a human being, and that should come first. So I found the statements made by the judge ruling in her recent case against Sony highly offensive. Judge Shirley Kornreich closing the case saying "every rape is not a gender-motivated hate crime" is so monstrous in its qualification of what kind of crime rape is as to be criminal for even stating it. I'm no activist by most standards, but in light of the utter inhumanity of that, (and since April happens to be Sexual Assault Awareness & Prevention Month #SAAPM,) I'm devoting this week's Second Sunday Slowly cover to a track that may do some small measure of good for victims of such crime:
PRIMA PRIMO - Cornflake Girl
In early January of 1994, pop-alternative songstress Tori Amos released Cornflake Girl in the UK, the first single from her second solo album, Under the Pink which was released internationally later that month. The track didn't get its US single release until May.
The track is said to be inspired by a conversation regarding the practice of genital mutilation of young females in Africa, and how the act was considered a betrayal of trust performed by a close female family member, a "cornflake girl."
Horrific as that concept is, the single nonetheless become Amos's biggest international hit during that period. Shortly after the U.S. single release, Tori Amos was announced as the first national spokeswoman for the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network, she herself being a rape survivor. Since its founding in June of 1994, Amos spoke out and performed benefit concerts on their behalf in an official capacity for 12 years before passing on the role of spokeswoman to Christina Ricci.
Prima Primo is one of six artists contributing to Barbados: A Tori Amos Covers Compilation for RAINN. The project was conceived by the members of A Place Both Wonderful And Strange as way to speak out about issues of patriarchal abuse of women, especially as it pertained to their female member, Niabi, and how it related to the recently revealed struggles of their friend, Alice Glass, formerly of Crystal Castles. Last July, Glass spoke of her story and released her first solo single called Stillborn with proceeds going to benefit charities that help survivors of abuse, including RAINN. APBW&S decided to gather friends to cover Tori Amos's work to benefit the same and released the compilation last December.
Prima Primo, who regard themselves as "industrial vaudeville," (though they sound more cold wave than industrial,) have taken Cornflake Girl underground to smother it in grave bindings. Once an upbeat sauntering track, they render it dark, dissonant, and mysterious with their out of the ordinary reconstruction. They offer little reason for choosing the track (their alternate pick was Cruel) except that they "really need to know what that rabbit did with the keys."
Honestly picking among the six covers for which to feature here wasn't easy either. Once you check this one out, feel free to click through to listen to the others on the Bandcamp page where you can donate-to-download if you so choose:
