First time here? Click here for details from first entry.
It's time for another downtempo track during what I refer to as Second Sunday Slowly! I was on the brink of sharing a cover of this track by a different dark electro artist earlier this year, but then this was released and I decided it was a better choice. Perhaps you'll think so too. It's a darkwave/industrial take on a one hit wonder from the solo career of a Swedish pop songstress who had split from one of the most successful disco groups of the seventies after "a good thing" came "to an end.":
Sun Goes Dark - I Know There's Something Going On (Frida)
Frida, known most prominently as Anni-Frid Lyngstad and as a member of ABBA, released I Know There's Something Going On in August 1982. It was the lead single from her first English solo album, Something's Going On which came out the following month. Previous to the album she had done two other less successful solo releases in Danish, both of which were mostly comprised of covers and produced by her then-husband and ABBA bandmate, Benny Andersson. This new album though was a distinct departure from her ABBA days, marking dramatically the division of the band and the end of her marriage to Andersson. Most accounts point to Andersson's infidelity as reason for their divorce and ultimately an inability for the group to stay together. While going through the break up, Frida took comfort listening to Face Value, an album by Phil Collins, especially his single In The Air Tonight, a song closely sympathetic with her feelings as it was later revealed to be about his own divorce. Collins was invited to produce her album and in one interview he confirmed that they, "had something in common as far as our divorces were concerned. We were both the injured party." Her label sent invitations for various publishers to send in songs for consideration on the album and they received over 500 responses. Among them, I Know There's Something Going On, written by Russ Ballard, turned out to have a message that reflected her personal experience in that moment. Sadly, however, this single was her only solo hit despite doing significantly well internationally.
The song has been covered over a dozen times, notably by Tre Lux (of Switchblade Symphony), Sleepthief, and Reizstrom.
Sun Goes Dark, a darkwave/industrial project helmed by Chris Bergeron and David Burdick, released their debut album Pieces of Humanity earlier this year on January 26. Their cover of I Know There's Something Going On is the second track on the album. When asked about their inspiration for it, Burdick said that the track was one they've, "been wanting to remake since our college days. It’s a song that we love and it was easy for us to hear the darker version in our heads before we even started on it. It’s also a subject that a lot of us have gone through, so it was easy in that aspect as well."
One significant difference between theirs and the original is the absence of the signature drum rhythms by Phil Collins. Burdick admits that he, "would have loved to do a drum tribute to him in that remake, but it would not have fit." That absence does seem to work in favor of their interpretation which gives the song a more eerie atmosphere, filling the sparseness of the original's instrumentation in ways that seem somewhat (if unintentionally) similar to that of In The Air Tonight.
Pieces of Humanity also features their cover of Simon & Garfunkel's The Sound Of Silence. Both covers are downtempo but their Frida cover is rhythmically denser and is quite a bit more solid for the dance-floor:

A Third Sunday Throwback to the 20th Century! A new wave pop novelty track from the eighties that was ABSOLUTELY NOT IN ANY WAY about masturbation gets a gritty and groovy nineties rock-industrial make-over!

For April I'm taking a vacation so I'll only have one gig. That will be on the last Friday for a Vampire party in Western Mass. In May, I'll go back to my regular schedule. As always, check my schedule for details, the RSVP link on Facebook, and other upcoming events and news! ↼‿ಠ
