It's a new year, but just before the Halloween of last we saw the release of a rather interesting tribute album devoted to an 80's era electro-industrial forerunner. Let's check out one of the highlights!:

Manufactura - Sex, Money, Freaks (Cabaret Voltaire)

Sheffield's "sinister hip-hop industrialists" Cabaret Voltaire released their ninth album, CODE in October 1987. The second track on the album was Sex, Money, Freaks, which was not released on a single until the 2001 remixed reissue of their 1983 Just Fascination. The song is one of two on the LP that includes saxophone. There doesn't appear to have been any prior covers of the song.

Roughly 31 years later on October 2018, Metropolis Records released an 18-track various artists tribute compilation titled, Why Kill Time (When You Can Cover Cabaret Voltaire). The title is a play of the band's song Why Kill Time (When You Can Kill Yourself) from their 1983 album, The Crackdown. The collection includes covers from Bestial Mouths, God Module, Microchip Junky, Mirland/Larsen(of Leæther Strip), NØIR, SØLVE, and others. Rhythmic noise industrialists Manufactura have called Cabaret Voltaire "one of the all time great projects in the dark electronic and industrial genre." They continued to state that Sex, Money, Freaks was "naturally" the track they "just had to do."

The original is a funky bit of comparatively mellow mood electronica with breathy vocals, chirpy melodies, and various found object samples. The cover heavily roboticizes the titular chorus and Karloz M's vocals are more throat-deep. Over all it's cleaner in construction but just as rhythmically infectious.

Another newer track as Second Sunday Slowly delivers some dark alternative downtempo and "creepy" with feet of clay!

For Martin Luther King Jr weekend I have two gigs late night back to back at Arisia, the sci-fi/fantasy convention in Boston. Music is pretty broad-range so it's not exclusively for the goth/industrial "purists"... but I WILL be blending in a lot of cross-format goodies and other surprises. So if you like geeky things, plan to be in the area, and want to check us out, CLICK HERE for DETAILS!

Feel free to leave a comment about that or tell me what you think about today's cover!
