This recap got a little "bloggy," so scroll down if "TL" and you just want to see what I played.

HaVeN's Covered Dish Fangsgiving was fun no question! And I really appreciate Penelope willing to take a risk and let me do this theme for the month.

However... I really need to work out some kinks in the promotion of these "covers only" themes that I've encouraged these past two years. (The first of which was at SeeDarkly's De'Basement in Cambridge last November when Haven was still quarterly.)
From some of the feedback I got last night, the impression a number of people had was that they could expect all dubstep versions or unheard of remixes of the music... or were just generally skeptical of what to expect.
Then several people came to me surprised, thrilled, and even grateful for what they heard and danced too. We even got an excellent amount of requests for covers, about half of which I'd never heard of (and I've done some extensive research!)

I understand the fear that one will travel and not find what they want to hear and dance to. It's the guiding force behind why I attend anything I do as well... I want to dance!
What I don't get is from where the impression of a "covers night" meaning primarily "dubstep" or "remixes" came.

Cover songs, to me, represent an interesting way to explore different versions of familiar songs, sometimes from genres outside our niche of goth/industrial music and STILL be goth/industrial. And yes, some cover songs are remixed or cross-over in format, riding that edge of appeal to several genres, but where an event like Haven is concerned, there should never be the worry that we'd go so far out of format as to be anything other than goth/industrial at the core.
Seeing people dance to something like a dark/gothy version of a WHAM track (or insert other guilty pleasure pop song) is a lot of fun and really rewarding. And there are a lot of really great covers we hear all the time, (like Not In Love or Zombie Nation,) though I think maybe they aren't recognized as such or known for their origins.
Maybe I should have post something of a primer like this BEFORE the night... but there's no guarantee it would've been read either.

If this IS read, and if I have the opportunity to do "Covered-Dish" again anywhere, just know I work very hard to research and sort through many songs to present what I feel confident is dance-worthy for an audience. I can only hope that my enthusiasm is shared and my intentions understood.
If it's not to your liking because of an appreciation for the original songs, I respect that too. But I can't promise I won't attempt this again. I may just have to sneak it under the radar next time. :)

So with that said, thank you Havenites for participating in the night!
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

My upcoming dates can be found on my webpage. I spin next at Haven in January!
