Welcome to SeeDarkly Sunday DisCOVERies, a weekly exploration of goth/industrial cover songs and a brief look at their origins! First time here? Click here for details from first entry.
This week I'm featuring a brother-sister act I've been excited about for a few years...:
Carbon Airways - Microwaved
In 1998, the British industrial rock group Pitchshifter released their fourth album, (their first on the Geffen label,) www.pitchshifter.com. No, that's not poorly written HTML. They actually used that website address as their title. I cannot say for certain that it was ever their real website (though it was on the CD art in a way that would imply it was, or that was part of a gag,) but it REALLY is not now (and I do not encourage anyone to check so it's not linked.) The first track on the album, Microwaved, was their second single from it. The track was included in a couple of Playstation games released at the same time.
Carbon Airways is the working name of two teen-aged siblings (now 18 & 19) from France who began performing festivals in 2010 before ever recording. Early in their lives the brother-sister act learned to play the violin and cello classically before advancing to guitar and bass, eventually progressing to computer-based electronic music. In 2012, after the independent label release of two E.P.s, they put their cover of Microwaved up on Soundcloud for free download. Interesting to consider that they were around 1 & 2 years old when the original song was released.
With Microwaved one can easily recognize the influence of bands like Prodigy and Ministry on the duo. Their version both adds electronically to some of the minimalized structure and simplifies the drum & bass rhythm of the original.
They still have yet to put out a full album, though their first is tentatively titled "OUTRENOIR" and expected to be released on Polydor. Keep an eye out for it.

October begins, leading us to our Goth-X-Mas celebration of Halloween so I will be featuring some seasonally appropriate covers over the next four Sundays!
Comments, suggestions, discussions, etc... welcome!
I've had to adjust my schedule so I will not be spinning again until the week of Halloween. My website will have an update of my schedule soon. ^_^
