JADED; October 8, 2011

I spun with DJ Dirge (with whom I'm working with at nearly every gig I have this month) and he definitely gave me lots I like to dance to.
For my part, I played a lot of requests, introduced some new music that got a pretty positive response, and experimented with a few things (some that went well, others that didn't really, but weren't a complete disaster either.) It felt like one of my stronger nights, but not without some mistakes I will learn from! Though, as usual, they are mistakes only I seem to notice. :)

I had an idea after the Floating Fetish Ball that I should bring one of my powered speakers to try to fill-out the sound on the dance-floor at Jaded. I am very pleased with how it supported and improved the sound overall. I think this will become a regular practice!
The bad news was that my headphones crapped out. Ugh. Glad I got them with a replacement plan. Dirge was super kind to let me use his. (Thank you sir!)

Sarula also announced our New Years Eve party, so we have that bit of fun to look forward to as well! More details soon!

On a personal note, I was thrilled to have my wife out with me for this event as part of celebrating her birthday! She doesn't come out with me to these events so much anymore, but when she does and I see her enjoying herself, it reminds me why I even started doing any of this. <3

We are doing JADED again on November 12 and I'll be spinning with DJ Shivar for the first time!
We're calling this one "Nine Inch Nails November! I hope you're a NIN fan... you're probably going to hear a bit of it. :)

I don't often use explicative adjectives to describe the events I DJ; I feel overuse of them diminishes their meaning. So when I say that the Floating Fetish Ball was an EPIC and AWESOME experience, I hope that conveys just how incredible I thought this was! I can't thank Sarula (of Jaded,) Patrick Fitzgerald, & Latex Lily (both of Xmortis,) enough for including me in such an amazing adventure!
DJ Chris Ewen was also amazing for being such a great and fun ship-mate behind the decks and so helpful with set-up and break down!
This happened to be the "maiden voyage" of my entire sound-system outside of my home so I was very grateful it all worked out as planned. I definitely learned a lot and had a great time!

Thanks to everyone who came and made the night such a success! You were the best part!
Here's looking forward to next year's!

(I also provided a pre-recorded mix for the Meet & Greet Pre-Party at Down Ultra Lounge before the boat launched. I couldn't be at the pre-party since I was setting up on the boat, so it was my way of being present "in spirit." It's not all that indicative of my usual kind of set, but I tried to integrate a lot of music styles for our hybrid crowd. I'm including a link to it in the playlist below should you like to give it a listen.)

Here's the stuff I played:

JADED; September 10, 2011

Spun with DJ Static and had a great time playing a bunch of video-gamed themed tracks. It was a lot of prep work but very rewarding. :)
There were neat costumes too (Link and Fairy from Zelda were my favorites!)
I also played a round of Sonic the Hedgehog, asserting yet again that I have very little skill at console games. :D

I'll be out to JADED again on October 8 with DJ Dirge for Lilth's 666th Birthday Bash!

Meanwhile, Jaded and Xmortis are less than a week away from the FLOATING FETISH BALL on the Freedom Cruise Ship in Boston on Friday, September 23! Chris Ewen and I will spin. Click the link for ticket and event details if you haven't already!

JADED; August 13, 2011

Spun with DJ Purple, who was fantastic and we had a superb tag set at the end of the night! My sets went well too, though we both experienced technical glitches completely beyond our control. Meanwhile, I was especially thrilled by the response to "You Did" which was one of 3 songs I'd never used previously. I'm trying to introduce at least 1 or 2 new songs to my library at every gig. Sometimes that can be risky; this time the risk paid off nice! :)

There were lots of great costumes for the superhero theme! X-men including Psylocke, Wolverine, Emma Frost, Magneto, and our MC, Raven Lightholme, as Mystique. The Bat-Family included Batman, Batgirl, Robin, Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn, Joker, and Sarula herself as Catwoman.
Other Marvels included Ghost Rider & Captain America. Other DCUs included Silk Spectre(the original), Dr. Manhattan, Natasha Irons (Steel), and, surprisingly, absolutely no Lanterns of any color! (I blame that damn movie; it really damaged the franchise, ugh!)

I was Polar Boy of the Legion of Superheroes and the only other Legionnaire was Supergirl (though I think they were only on the roster at the same time for the Crisis of 3 Legions.) Polar Boy was an obscure choice, and certainly I was not faithful to any of the character's actual costume designs, but I've been hanging on to my Legion Flight Ring for far too long to not use it! So we will see Polar Boy back in action in the future.
Though I was suppose to have ice powers, I was insanely warm most of the night. Warm makes me grumpy but I still managed to have a good time.
We need more superheroes in shorts... I think it's time to look into an Aquaman outfit!

I'll be out to JADED again on September 10 with DJ Static for a Video Game themed party! There will be games to play including Dance Central on stage! See him or me for discount coupons and be there!

March has been pretty exciting so far.
I've done well over all. Choked on my own panic for one set. These things happen. But on the whole, the feedback has been educational and gratifying.

Not going to get too detailed right now because I have Jury Duty in the morning and really ought to already be in bed.

So here are my playlists for Haven, Hell, and Jaded last week.
Next week I spin for the first time ever at Legion in Providence!

The snowfall in the early part of the month caused some rescheduling so I had to be flexible about that. And despite any number of other complications, mishaps, and potential unpleasantness, things still went pretty well over all for my gigs in February... progressively better after each as the worst of the weather passed following my birthday.
I've found that things that I feared were problems really just aren't. There are some things I simply can not change, at least not on my own or as things stand. But in the long run, they don't seem to have any lasting or real effect on my life other than what I allow. The tough part is that I still allow them more power than they deserve from time to time. I'll learn.

Meanwhile, I'm still occasionally making mistakes to learn from (paving the way for all new mistakes) and growing where I can.
March is looking like a very busy month and I'm very excited for a number of new opportunities I've been offered! I will work, as ever, to be worthy of them all.
I'll post my schedule soon.

Here are my playlists for the month. Feel free to make copies; as many as you like. :'x

Ok... I'll admit it. I've grown.
The beginnings of this year have shown me that.
My inclination may always be to find my faults and focus on them but just now I'm feeling that I've achieved, at the very least, some small measure of competence as a DJ.

Jaded's New Year's Eve party was an amazing experience! It was the busiest Jaded event I've seen to date and, while every detail was not "perfect" and I made my share of errors (as if I could get through any post without recognizing some failings,) everyone seemed to have a great time bringing in the new year with us! I tagged with Dirge, which was a lot of fun and humbling!
The performances and features of the night were sexy, fun, chaotic, and silly.
There are far too many stories to tell, some probably best never mentioned again, hahaha!
Definitely looking forward to spinning at Jaded in February with Dirge again!

Haven's first party of the year, the Bloodlust Vampires Ball, was an extraordinary night filled with high-energy and a NON-STOP dance floor that just kept building and held strong to the end of the night! I have been learning so much about this DJ trade I'm in and this night was a particular success for me on a number of levels.

One being that my second set was quite possibly the best I've ever done.
I wouldn't say it was in anyway a groundbreaking set musically as I didn't experiment with any new music, but I did turn every bit of nervous energy, conflicts, and doubts I had into a solid half hour of the best I could offer, technically, musically, and in the service of others.
It was elating!
But make no mistake, I have not arrived. I'm still as prone as ANY other DJ to make a mistake on occasion, but I've learned so much over these past few years and I'm just excited to see that what I've learned and have put into practice is making the experience enjoyable for others!

I also faced a particularly burdensome personal demon that's been plaguing me with frustration, anger, and an anxiety about being unable to change what some think negatively about me for something better. I'm resolved to move past it, accept what I can't change, and be professional enough to set it aside and do the best job possible for the sake of everyone looking to the DJ booth to satisfy their needs for awesome experiences. I can only hope I live up to the best of expectations and will continue to work as hard as I can to be worthy of any opportunities I have given to me.

An interesting side-note about the night: No DJ played Lady Gaga! That isn't to say there was not some novelty pop music mixed into the night, but the goth scene seems to have embraced and simultaneously shunned Gaga in such a way that it's just nice to see her get a rest so that we can regain that sense of novelty about her again later.

My next booking for this month, in lieu of any changes that could happen between now and then, will be an early evening set at Sin Fest @ Club Hell in Providence, RI on January 26. It'll be my first night back spinning at Hell since my surgery.
I'm hoping to use the time off to develop two new mash-ups and complete a couple of demo CD's I've been fine-tuning. (So for those of you who ask about my next mash up after SpitGloss, or if you can have a disc of me spinning... the answer is: it's coming soon.)

JADED; October 9, 2010

I spun with DJ Static. I haven't spun with him in a long time and it was quite laid back and fun! We did a quick tag at the end of the night. If it is true about "time flying when you're having fun," then we had one hell of a good time because the night felt like it was over in a flash!
Lots of good energy and new people met!
I won't get back to Jaded again until 2011, so this was a good enjoyable way to end the season.
I'm still waiting for info on another related event that could prove to be tons of fun...
hope it pans out so I can divulge it soon!

Meanwhile, my last booking for the month is tomorrow at Haven (Tuesday, October 12) for another round of No Theme, Just DANCE with DJs Dirge & Static!

JADED; September 11, 2010

Highlights:
* Spun with DJ Gabriell! It's been a while and I would've been dancing my ass off to his sets if I could dance yet! (The time will come...)
* He brought his deck so I didn't have to bring mine. They are operationally about the same so it wasn't hard to use at all.
* Someone offered me a big snake from Redneck Reptile Rescue and I ran away! Guh! Fun for some, fear for me.
* To honor 9/11, I dropped Rebeckah del Rio's Star Spangled Banner.
* I played an overall familiar mix of music. I'm also trying to avoid playing repetitive requests while simultaneously playing stuff those making the requests will like. It seemed to be enjoyed but I'm still working on maintaining a balance. :)
* I had a great talk with Sarula about some very cool things on the horizon. More TBA...

Sarula has me out for JADED again on October 9 with DJ Static.
