I've been excited to share this since I found it just before the November holiday and I think it's a solid closer for the year:
Comasoft - Let's Go All the Way
Sly Fox was a new wave/dance-pop duo made up of Gary "Mudbone" Cooper, a former singer for Parliament-Funkadelic, and an undistinguished Los Angeles-based singer, Michael Camacho. Thirty years ago this month, they released what would be their only album which features the one-hit wonder title track, Let's Go All the Way. While on the surface, the chorus of the song seemed little more than a juvenile solicitation for sexual satisfaction, Cooper insists he simply meant for it to imply that "whatever your goal, dream or vision, you should go all the way to get it." The rest of the lyrics seem to illustrate discontentment with politics and a desire to improve on the societal condition. Certainly a relatable message, even today.
While the members of Sly Fox faded into relative obscurity, the song has not been forgotten and was covered a few times over the years, most notably by Insane Clown Posse. In 2000, they created a huge publicity stunt out of trying to get MTV's Total Request Live to play the video. They were not successful but the song is still part of their live repertoire nonetheless.
In mid-October of this year, Comasoft released their EBM/dance-industrial cover of Let's Go All the Way on the WTII Records label. The EP single is a departure from their previous pop-rock sound, offering a dark-electronic synth-pop core that seem heavily influenced by their time touring with Apoptygma Berzerk and IAMX and their love of The Faint and The Cure. The cover is kinetic and rhythmically familiar while synth-fully buzzing their uniquely spectral interpretation of melodies and lyrics.
