Today is Third Sunday Throwback where we feature a cover track from the 20th century. And seeing as we're almost at the year anniversary and I haven't gotten to any cover of or by The Cure, let's do that!
Lead singer Robert Smith, in an introduction to NME's 2009 cover compilation, Pictures Of You - A Tribute To Godlike Geniuses The Cure, says there are three questions an artist should consider in order to be successful with a cover: "Am I inspired?" "Is my method good?" & "Does it work?"
He goes into more detail with each question, but suffice to say today's featured cover, a long standing dance-floor favorite, seems to have met such criteria:

Snake River Conspiracy - Love Song

The Cure released their eighth studio album, Disintegration in 1989. Lovesong was the third single from the album. This new wave ballad, said to be written by Smith as a wedding gift to his wife Mary, was an international success.
The track has since been covered in a variety of styles by numerous artists (at least over thirty by my cursory count.) One such artist was Snake River Conspiracy.

Snake River Conspiracy released their only full length album, Sonic Jihad in 2000. It was the industrial electronic rock project of Jason Slater, former bassist of Third Eye Blind, who brought in Hot Topic model Tobey Torres for vocals. Things didn't work out with them and they parted ways after their first tour. Martina Axén of Drain Sth was brought in to replace Torres on following tours, then Torres eventually rejoined and left quickly again, so the band never really made any headway on recording anything after Jihad.

Regardless, the album featured three cover songs: T-Ride's You and Your Friend, The Smiths' How Soon Is Now, and The Cure's Lovesong. (They also covered She Said She Said by The Beatles but it was only included on their single release of Vulcan.)

SRC's cover opens with a bombastic high-energy overture before collapsing into an aggressively sensual industrial rhythm. Coupled with Torres's strong and sultry vocals, this track has had many goth-clubs reveling in its excellence ever since. Transforming Love Song from a mellow goth ballad to an audacious industrial declaration, clearly they were inspired, had a good method, and definitely made this cover work:

Next week:
Next Sunday it's the season premiere of a certain HBO show based on a book series by one of my favorite authors! In recognition, I'll present an interview with an industrial artist who knows how to "play the Game!"

Comments, suggestions, discussions, etc... welcome!

I have three gigs wrapping up April: this Friday, next Sunday, and the Wednesday after. Check my schedule for details if you're anywhere in New England and want to join. There's a good chance I'm playing some of these covers among other great goth/industrial/dark alternative music! ^_^
