Welcome to SeeDarkly Sunday DisCOVERies:
a weekly exploration of goth, industrial, & dark alternative cover songs!
First time here? Click here for details from first entry.

Not that this blog ever "needs" a theme, but this month we'll be focusing on alternate covers of songs previously featured here or an additional cover from an artist we've already presented. It's what I'm calling "Anotha' Cova' Novemba'!" In light of the midterm elections this week, I wanted to present something empowering that would represent hope in the fight against cruelty, deplorable behavior, and criminal injustices. I've previously featured covers by Information Society & Null Device who have also done (We Don't Need This) Fascist Groove Thang and All You Fascists Bound To Lose respectively... which are certainly appropriate. But instead of talking about the enemy, I wanted to empower those of us in the fight against them somehow. I think I've found just the thing in the catalog of an artist I featured in March for her cover of Front 242's Headhunter. I hope this will be inspirational to keep our collective morale high no matter this week's election results (but let's also VOTE for the best, yeah?):

Ayria - Invincible (Pat Benatar)
In 1985, Pat Benatar released Invincible as not only the lead single from her sixth studio album Seven the Hard Way but also as the theme song of the film The Legend of Billie Jean. The film was poorly received at the box office, but it later became something of a cult classic, spawning a number of small stage musical productions with Invincible as their centerpiece. The song was written by Simon Climie and Holly Knight (known previously for Obsession.) Benatar revealed in one interview that the song was in tune with her work five years prior, but not the type of song she wanted to be doing at that time. She said it was a good song but described it as a "Frankenstein" that didn't really fit with anything else on the album.
Songwriter Knight, on the other hand, said in one interview that the song is one of her favorites and that she'd "love to hear that song cut by an alternative band," citing Foo Fighters as her example at the time.
Well... Foo Fighters didn't cover it but a few metal and art rock bands have, as well drag performer Lexi Tucker-Dixon who released a single of their version in April this year.
Futurepop/industrial artist Ayria, also known as Jennifer Parkin, released her cover of Invincible in 2008 on a bonus disc that she attached to her fifth album, Hearts For Bullets. The disc, titled Planet Parkin, has since also been released separately.
Parkin, in a news post on her website, says her reason for covering the track was "specifically because a dear friend in San Francisco asked me to cover that song for the anniversary of his long running club night “Death Guild” there."
She also said she'd never considered attempting any covers until this CD and continued, "I don’t have a problem with covers. It’s a lot less work to sing what others have already written, I just didn’t want a cover song to be the reason my music got attention. I preferred to rely on my own stuff to make a mark. It’s been my opinion that bands that get popular only by the exposure of a cover song, never seem to last. That being said, with 50 original songs under my belt now just as Ayria, I feel free to have fun doing covers when the opportunity comes up!"
She also has a cover of Change by Deftones on this album and has done covers of Depeche Mode, Front 242, and gothic parody of B-52's Rock Lobster with Bella Morte.

Her version of Invincible is pretty loyal to the original if subtly modified with a bit of a poppy glitch rock electronica, modernizing and magnifying this already affecting anthem of empowerment for those in need as they face their enemy! :
