Welcome to SeeDarkly Sunday DisCOVERies, my blog about goth/industrial cover songs!
What's this? Click here for details from first entry.

If you've been following along over the past couple of weeks, you might have noted a particular theme. Maybe it's futile to state... but I live in hope and this week's "Cover A La Mode" just happens to continue the theme. So let's see it through since, at the very least, it's an excellent track.:

Virgins O.R Pigeons - People Are People

People Are People is regarded widely as Depeche Mode's breakout hit in the United States. The single was released in early 1984, several months before being included on their fourth album, Some Great Reward. Written by Martin Gore, it stands as one of his most straight forward lyrical commentaries on racism and a need for people recognize their similarities to work toward unity. However, it's been said that the lack of subtlety in the song's message is one of the things Gore likes least about it. Perhaps for that and other reasons stemming from its widespread recognition, the track has been reportedly absent from the band's concerts since the late 80's. (Having seen the band live around the turn of the century, I honestly can not remember missing the performance of it to verify it wasn't played.)
The message resonates nonetheless and it seems a message worth repeating often given so many signs that it hasn't been heard. It could just be a good time for the band to put it back into circulation on their next tour.

Many artists have covered the song: A Perfect Circle, Dope, and RuPaul are among the notable. In 2009, Virgins O.R Pigeons, a dark electro trio from Greece, contributed their cover of People Are People to their label's compilation release, Alfa Matrix Re:covered - A Tribute To Depeche Mode. Their version is faster, harder, has more bass and is slimmed elementally down to a EBM synth core, free of the various "found samples" included in the original. It's both a highly energetic dance track and an outstanding interpretation.

Bonus Sunday A La Mode:
Just because they're ridiculously cute, clever, and notable for their ingenuity, I wanted to share an additional cover from this Colombian Depeche Mode cover band, DMK. DMK formed in 2010 and consists of a father and his pre-teen daughter and son; the first initials of their names combining to make the band name. They've posted a number of videos covering various Mode songs and recently have produced a high quality video for their first original single, done in the style of Depeche Mode. This cover of Black Celebration is a beautiful example of their unique style and talent.

Next week:
A celebration of another kind as prelude to one of the upcoming season's most anticipated events!

Comments, suggestions, discussions, etc... welcome!

In the month of December I'll spin three times in the Boston area and one in Western Mass.
My schedule has the dates and links to RSVP are forthcoming. Check in there for details. ^_^
