seedarklyxero: (SeeDarkly Sunday Discoveries)
Welcome to SeeDarkly Sunday DisCOVERies:
a weekly exploration of goth, industrial, & dark alternative cover songs!
First time here? Click here for details from first entry.

This week we wrap up Octoberween with the fifth and final edition for the year. Back in July, I introduced an interstitial segment of the blog where I would present four additional covers of songs previously featured here. The plan was to do that occasionally on a fourth Sunday and call it "Four by Four." For Octoberween, I moved our regularly scheduled Fifth Sunday A La Mode to the first Sunday this month and decided that this time, for the Halloween season, we could do FIVE!
And for "Five by Five," there's a goth anthem that I probably should have reserved for this month, but decided to feature it back on the first anniversary of SDSD. Since I couldn't restrain myself then, I've since listened to over 120 versions of this song and now offer you five unique covers of...: Bela Lugosi's Dead by Bauhaus!
You can check out my previous blog detailing some of its history and the cover by 9th Evolution by clicking this link!

Five Other Covers of Bela Lugosi's Dead (Bauhaus)

The Bonecollectors:
This Russian gothabilly band led by guitarist Oleg Guitaricula and singer Zombierella seems to work interchangeably between the band names "Messer Chups" and "The Bonecollectors." They only released one album under the latter name: the 2012 Bone On Bone which features their cover of Bela. It is also included on their 2016 compilation, The Voice Of Zombierella, which highlights some of the best of her work between the two projects. Together they've also done covers of Ministry's Stigmata and Sister of Mercy's Lucretia, My Reflection. This fast-paced version of the track coupled with Zombierella's breathy accented chirping is a dynamically original approach!

Dead Brothers:
Moving into a somewhat dark western/steampunk direction, The Dead Brothers perform an eclectic and eerie mix of blues, folk, gypsy, Cajun, country, and world music that sets them apart from easy categorization. The Geneva-based band released this cover of Bela on their album, 5th Sin-Phonie, in March 2010. Deep masculine vocals and a heavy use of string instrumentation give it a quality that might inspire images of a ravenous gender-swapped Rasputina in pursuit of Victorian-era prey!

Camping Car:
Rubin Steiner is a multi-genre French artist who, for a brief time, teamed up with vocalist Mme Douze to form their synthpop project, Camping Car. They did an energetic up-beat rendition of Bela for their label's 2005 covers compilation, Chantier N°4 - Reprise. As fleeting as the collaboration might have been, this is a standalone gem with all the spunk and verve of Ladytron or The Faint, if a bit candied, and is another of the more unique interpretations of the track.

Godhead:

This up-tempo industrial take on Bela is among the best in the genre, but seems to have a complicated origin. It appears to have been first released in 2004 on a Cleopatra Records various artists mixed compilation under Godhead's name, titled Non-Stop Ride, with only the last three of the nineteen songs on the album from the band. There's some indication that the track itself was only done by Godhead's frontman, Jason Miller and Julian Beeston (formerly of Nitzer Ebb), both of whom mixed the album, but the specifics are a little unclear and not easily verified. The cover's 80's sound is owed significantly to the use of samples from the 1982 hip-hop track, Planet Rock by Afrika Bambaataa and Soulsonic Force. Since its release, this cover has been included on over 30 goth, industrial, and Halloween compilations. (Of additional note: This version has a striking similarity to one produced by a trio of DJs who released it as their only single under the name Jay Harker in 2002. It could be entirely coincidental and legitimate as there doesn't appear to be any disputes regarding it, but the resemblance seemed far too remarkable to ignore.)

The Pink Skulls:
Our last cover slips back into a mysterious down-tempo frame that you might not expect from a psychobilly/horror punk band but is entirely in keeping with its musicians who have stylized aliases like Von Eerie, Lux Capacitor, Jello Lugosi, Morticia, Bones, and Eddie Van Helsing. It's actually quite unique contrasted against the rest of their only known album Mega Monster Madness, released in 2010 on Halloween, which also features a cover of The Monster Mash by Bobby "Boris" Picket.
This is a twisted masterpiece of b-movie cinematic spookiness, featuring a suspense-heightening theremin and lyrics delivered in the counterpoint of ghastly male spoken word against ghostly female melodies.

Let me know if I missed one!

Next week:
I'd love to say I'll be relating some hulk of an industrial cover to Ragnarok in some way... here's hoping I find something "Hela Good!"

Comments, suggestions, discussions, etc... welcome!

Due to an unfortunate scheduling conflict I only have one event to DJ this November. As always, details can be found on my schedule if you're in the area and care to attend! ^_^
