Since I only have the one booking this month I thought, rather than do a monthly schedule entry, I'd focus on something more personal.
So this is a look at some of what I'm going through with my surgery/recovery, including pictures!
I'll put some of this material under a cut because apparently some of these pictures are so offensive Myspace deleted them from a private album just after I uploaded them. (btw: hate Myspace these days)

Let me start with this, for those who aren't aware of what I'm having done, or in the case anyone might have the need for it themselves : Click here for a rundown of the procedure.
(You can also click the tag "knee" for the few previous entries about this on my LiveJournal.)

Now the surgery went as expected on Monday, March 22. No complications. Everything as planned.
They drugged a nerve in my leg that left it entirely without feeling for nearly 24 hours.
I found out that the anesthesia they used to put me under also caused some short term memory loss so I have no memory of seeing or speaking to my doctor before going under for the operation. That concerned me some when I woke, but I got over it because all my nurses were very comforting (though not in any fun, dirty way) and the my doctor explained everything I had asked him previously again very patiently and with good humor.
I woke hungry and not allowed to eat until morning. Plus I couldn't sleep most of the night.
But I really noticed no pain. In the morning I had a couple awesome omelets, jello and toast! For being hospital food...Yum!

After the visit from my surgeon and some physical therapy training I got approval to go home.

Once I was home, and after a couple of days on my pain meds (Oxycontin) I really was starting to hate how they were making me feel, both emotionally and cognitively. I cut my prescribed dosages early. I've been off of anything stronger than Tylenol the last day of March and I'm not suffering at all. I get occasional twitches, spasms, and dull aches, but no amount of pain I can't manage without narcotics.

Now as for the leg itself...
I'm going to show that, but under a cut (on DW) and after a stream of "spoiler bullets" to prevent anyone who is grossed out by such from going any further on the feed to Facebook.

I had the initial surgery on my knee last Wednesday. The timing was excellent in terms of my schedule for any events I spin and I'm certain I'll be 95-99% by Halloweek.

The recovery time was supposed to be only a few days and has been moving along as expected. I can walk again without crutches or cane but still need support with stairs and can do about 75-80% of any of the work-outs I do with GZ at home or at the gym. I haven't actually tried to do any of our gym work-outs yet. I wanted to wait until I'd gone to physical therapy at least once to get an evaluation on where I stand.

The remarkable thing is that I've had no pain and the Vicodin they prescribed won't be necessary. I'll keep it in case I encounter something unusual later, but I prefer not to use pain medications if I don't have to.

The surgery confirmed that I have portions of my cartilage that are worn all the way to the bone. This indicates that I am a candidate for the ACI procedure which can replace what I've lost with new cartilage. The doctor cleaned the area up and has taken some of the tissue to begin harvesting new cells. They grow the cells for about two weeks and then freeze them while he does the insurance dance that will ensure we get this covered. Once coverage is confirmed (and I'm optimistic about this because the doctor seems to speak of it in a way that makes it evident he knows the hoops through which he'll have to jump for the insurance company) they will thaw the cells out to grow more for another month before implantation.
I'm really hoping we can accomplish this before the end of the year but until the insurance dance is done we can't really schedule it.

I could not really go through this without the support and care of my Lady GZ and am grateful every day for her! I know what's coming will make me less able to contribute to our house duties for a while, especially during the winter when I would be the one to shovel snow, but she offers me nothing but support, encouragement, and love. I still have no idea how I got this lucky.

So in the meantime we've got costumes to complete for next week and we're running out of time. Some of the material we've had to order for our Venture Brothers characters have not come in still and we're uncertain if any of it is even coming. :(
Our Super Friends character costumes are pretty close to complete though, so we'll at least have that.
Of course, we've gone with a modernization of those characters, but they should be easy to recognize for any 70's era Super Friends fans. hee hee

p.s. Tomorrow I'll post my play lists from Plague and Jaded earlier this month.

Had fun last night spinning at Haven's second annual Haven Faire. I was going to dress as the "Black Fool" from Christopher Moore's book, Fool, for the renaissance theme, but decided I'd be too hot and stuck to a simple vest and kilt instead. GZ, on the other hand, broke out this beautiful dark corset outfit she's been hiding and looked gorgeous!

I spun along side Azrael & Mothra, and I got to drop Do You Wanna Date My Avatar (video below) for "everyone who skipped World of Warcraft" to come out. Oh yes, it rocked! (:

Unfortunately, GZ and I had to leave promptly after my second set so we could be rested for an early appointment with an orthopedic surgeon today.

The details: I have a old knee injury that is slowly degenerating my cartilage, creating gaps not unlike potholes in a road. GZ & I (though mostly GZ because she's awesome like that) have been researching some options that may help and found one that appears really promising where by they remove a tiny piece of cartilage to grow a larger piece and then graft it over the "potholes." The doctor will need to attempt one other option first in order to get the promising option covered by insurance.
The first stage option trims away frayed portions of cartilage while storing some for later culturing. That will put me on crutches for 2-3 days with some physical therapy to follow.
If or when we move on to the growth-to-graft option (it's called ACI,) once grafted I'll be on crutches for 2 months and could have some distinct limitations on certain physical activity for up to 18-22 months, depending on my recovery and assimilation of the tissue.

I may be able to get all this started with out it affecting any of my current schedule. Once I do the ACI surgery, that will complicate some of my long distance gigs unless I have help with the driving. Haven will still be possible thanks to GZ. Plague may require some help from someone else, but we'll see what happens. I'm both excited and nervous about it, but it's the most hopeful I've been about the future of my knee in a long time!

So, before any of that happens, my next night of spinning will be for JADED at Gemstones in Lowell on September 12, once again with DJ Dirge!
I have cards for discounted entry, so if you see me out (perhaps at Haven next Tuesday for Estro-jam,) let me know you're coming and I'll give you a couple for you and a guest!

Here's my playlist for Haven Faire:
