Welcome to SeeDarkly Sunday DisCOVERies:

First time here? Click here for details from first entry.
For this, the last of a year's worth of weekly entries, on the eve of a new season of a show based off of books written by one of my favorite authors, let's journey beyond the Seven Kingdoms for an industrial cover of that show's theme:
Sebastian Komor - Game Of Thrones Theme
In February of 2011, just 10 weeks before Game Of Thrones would debut on HBO, it was reported that composer Stephen Warbeck departed the production of the score and was replaced by Iranian/German composer Ramin Djawadi. For the show's theme music and overall identity, Djawadi was instructed to avoid the use of the flutes and vocals that had been so popular with other fantasy genre films and series. His inspiration for the theme is said to have come largely from just watching an early rendering of the computer animated title sequence. The show premiered on April 17, 2011 and the soundtrack was made available that June.
Since then there have been a considerable number of remixes and fan remakes. Sebastian Komor, [Icon of Coil, Komor Kommando, et.al.,] as a fan of the show himself, went into his studio, worked out all the parts, put his "twist" on it, and released the cover for free download in late December 2012.
When confirming with Komor that his version was indeed a cover and not just a remix (as some have mistaken it,) I was able to conduct a short interview with him:
SDSD: You've also done covers of "John the Revelator," "Personal Jesus," and "Fly on the Windscreen" as Komor Kommando with End: the DJ on the Alfa Matrix Depeche Mode Tribute albums, a cover of Front 242's "Headhunter" on Icon of Coil's "Android" single, and a full tribute album of Nitzer Ebb covers as Muscle And Hate with the guys from XP8. Are there any other covers buried in your discography?
Komor: Fly On The Windscreen was done with Jonas Groth of the APB family. Covers just happen sometimes for fun really. I also always found it interesting to pick apart songs I have enjoyed for years. Often you find yourself surprised with how some of the songs parts are programmed or designed. I've also done a cover of The Cure's Lovesong, which was a gift for a friend, on YouTube you can find my demo of a cover of Nirvana's Breed. On my Soundcloud there is a cover of Kraftwerk's Man Machine, again all for fun really. Just something to do in between the crunch.
SDSD: Assuming you're a fan of the show (and possibly the books,) was there anything specific about "Game of Thrones" that inspired you to cover the theme song?
Komor: To be honest I have not seen the last 2-3 seasons. Due to my schedule I sort of dropped off that bandwagon on season three I think, or maybe season two, not sure. I just really love the theme song. A very uplifting/imaginative track. I did however feel it could benefit from more beats and bass lines, which is what inspired me to do the cover in the first place, and let's be honest, it has brought many people to my music, which is always great.
SDSD: So was the fact that the "Game of Thrones" theme brought new fans to your music part of what inspired your 2014 release, "Vikings, Thrones & Dragonbones" or did that come from some extension of any various unused elements you had developed while working on the cover?
Komor: From what I recall it happened around the same time. In fact, the tracks on Vikings, Thrones & Dragonbones were intended for a new Komor Kommando album. However by the time I was almost done I felt it didn't fit and some songs went places I did not expect. The label and I talked and agreed on releasing it as a separate album.
SDSD: Are there any songs or artists you're inspired by who you'd like to cover or are planning to cover in the future?
Komor: No current plans of doing any covers. Focused on my gig at FiXT, new Ayria EP, a remix for For All The Emptiness [both Toronto artists] and my long over due second Komor Kommando album. Regarding Komor Kommando, it tends to take time to figure out what path I want to make on a KK album. But the path has been found so it's all full throttle from now on!
Until that's ready, take a listen to where his path down Kingsroad led him:
