Welcome to this week's edition of SeeDarkly Sunday DisCOVERies, where I highlight goth/industrial cover songs! First time here? Click here for details given in the first edition. :)
Second Sunday Slowly... Time for something down-tempo:
Moon Talk - Our Lips Are Sealed
The origins of this track hail back to the late 70's when the then lead singer of the Specials and the guitarist for the Go-Gos got themselves into a bit of an illicit affair. During the relationship, Terry Hall wrote lyrics for the song and mailed them to Jane Wiedlin, who finished the lyrics and wrote the music. Wiedlin has said that the song is about their romance and the drama of him having been involved(engaged) to someone else during it. It would seem she felt more of an excitement about it than regret given the upbeat pop-rock nature of what would be the first single released in 1981 from the Go-Go's first album, Beauty and the Beat. Hall, who had formed the band Fun Boy Three, also recorded and released a far more somber version of the song a couple of years later.
Fast forward to 2015: During this past spring, ABC started running ads for their summer season sci-fi television drama called The Whispers which is based off Ray Bradbury's short story Zero Hour. One suspenseful ad featured a version of Our Lips Are Sealed by an alternative-shoegaze band from out of LA, Moon Talk. The band had already recorded and made the track available for review online as early as January, but only just recently released it as a single in June, owing to some problem with their label's distribution. Appropriate for the tone of the show it was used to advertise, Moon Talk's version begins as a chillingly moody piano piece, building in drama with the gradual injection of percussion and thunderous bass, only to drop silent and rebuild again.
Swirly goth dancers might feel the beauty in its beat.
